Google Ads for Medical Practices: Rules, Setup and Tips

Google Ads for medical practices can fill a diary fast, because patients search for treatments at the exact moment they need them. But healthcare is one of Google’s most regulated ad categories. This guide, written by a pharmacist, explains what Google’s healthcare policy allows, when you need certification, and how to set up campaigns that turn searches into booked patients.

Key takeaways

  • Most clinical services can advertise on Google Ads without special approval
  • Online pharmacies, prescription and telemedicine services, addiction services and US health insurance need Google certification
  • Unauthorized pharmacies, unapproved substances and speculative treatments aren’t allowed
  • Google doesn’t allow audiences or remarketing based on health conditions
  • Country rules matter: the UK bans advertising prescription-only medicines to the public

Can Medical Practices Advertise on Google Ads?

Yes. GP practices, private clinics, dentists, physiotherapists, dermatologists and most specialists can run Search ads for their services. Restrictions apply to specific products and services, mostly around prescription medicines, pharmacies, addiction treatment and unproven therapies. Always check the current policy before launch, because Google updates it regularly.

What Google's Healthcare and Medicines Policy Restricts

Services that need certification

  • Prescription drug services, such as online pharmacies and telemedicine that prescribes
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturers, and only in selected countries
  • Addiction services, including recovery and treatment centers
  • Health insurance in the US (dental, vision and travel cover are exceptions)
  • Abortion-related ads in the UK, US and Ireland

What isn't allowed

  • Unauthorized pharmacies, such as selling prescription drugs without a prescription
  • Unapproved substances, including products containing ephedra
  • Products or services built around speculative or experimental treatments (with narrow exceptions)
  • Prescription opioid painkillers (with narrow exceptions for certified US addiction providers)

Country rules matter

Google applies local law on top of its own policy. In the UK, prescription-only medicines can’t be advertised to the public at all, so ads should promote the consultation or service, not a named medicine. In the US, prescription drug advertising is possible only with the right Google certification.

Targeting and Remarketing Limits

Google’s personalized advertising policy doesn’t allow ads that target people based on health conditions, so you can’t build remarketing lists of ‘people who visited our diabetes page’ or similar. Target by search intent and location instead, and keep remarketing to general audiences such as all site visitors.

How to Set Up Google Ads for a Medical Practice

1. One campaign per service

Separate campaigns for each main treatment (for example, implants, physiotherapy, skin checks) so budgets follow the services that matter most.

2. Tight location targeting

Target the area patients will actually travel from, and set targeting to people ‘in’ that area rather than ‘interested in’ it.

3. Call assets and call tracking

Many patients prefer to phone. Add call assets, schedule them for opening hours, and track calls as conversions.

4. A landing page for each service

Send each campaign to a page about that treatment, with prices or a price guide, practitioner credentials, reviews and an online booking button. A generic homepage converts far worse.

landing page built for patients

5. Negative keywords from day one

Block searches like jobs, training courses, ‘free’, ‘NHS’ (for private UK clinics) and symptom research that won’t lead to a booking.

6. Track bookings, not clicks

Count online bookings, form submissions and calls as conversions, so Google’s bidding learns which searches bring patients.

Tracking Patients Without Breaking Privacy Rules

In the US, tracking pixels on patient-facing pages can expose protected health information under HIPAA. Keep tracking on booking confirmations generic (“booking completed”, not the treatment or condition), avoid sending form contents to ad platforms, and agree your setup with your compliance adviser. In the UK and EU, analytics and ad cookies need consent under UK GDPR and PECR.

How Much Should a Practice Spend?

Work backwards from patients, not from a round number. Use Google Keyword Planner to find typical cost per click for your treatments and area, estimate how many clicks it takes to get one booking (your landing page’s conversion rate tells you this; if you don’t know it yet, start with a cautious guess and correct it after a month), and multiply. Then compare that cost per patient with what a new patient is worth to you.

Google Ads for Medical Practices: FAQs

Do doctors need Google certification to advertise?

Not for most clinical services. Certification is needed for specific categories such as online pharmacies, prescription and telemedicine services, addiction services and US health insurance.

Can a UK private clinic advertise a weight-loss injection?

Not by naming a prescription-only medicine. UK law bans advertising prescription-only medicines to the public. You can advertise the consultation or weight management service, within the CAP Code.

Can I use remarketing for my clinic?

You can remarket to general audiences such as all website visitors, but not to lists based on health conditions or sensitive treatment pages.

Why was my medical ad disapproved?

Usually because the ad or landing page mentions a restricted drug, makes an unsupported health claim, or the service needs certification. The disapproval reason in Google Ads names the policy; fix the issue or apply for certification, then appeal.
